Bushwick, Brooklyn-based DJ and musician, SUPERFLOWER grew up surrounded by flowers and stacks of dusty, rare groove vinyl at his parents’ flower shop in rural Japan. After a chance encounter with funk icon George Clinton in Japan, SUPERFLOWER was inspired to move to NYC and see how the city’s energy would change they way he made music.
Drawing from an eclectic pool of influences, SUPERFLOWER creates a dense layered sound that is not easy to categorize. Blending together melodic ensembles from Asia to Africa, funk and soul grooves are filtered through analog synths and acoustic instruments, while the rhythm is rounded out by percussion, samplers and drum machines. Listen close and you will hear nods to Grover Washington JR, Nujabes, Boards of Canada, Prefuse 73, and Four Tet, amongst many others. Since moving to Brooklyn, SUPERFLOWER has become a regular on the New York DJ scene, spinning at the Wythe Hotel, Kinfolk, and the Ace Hotel.
